Coffee and social impact: getting to know Fazenda de Esperança (Farm of Hope)
The International Camp in
Brazil is the second appointment of C.O.F.F.E.E. project, involving 8
organizations from 7 different countries – Germany, Belgium, Spain, Italy,
Colombia, Brazil and Indonesia. The aim of the project is to improve the
chances of education and working opportunities in the coffee industry,
especially for young people. Leader of the project is the German NGO
Starkmacher, active in the field of youth empowerment, along with European
companies, coffee producers and an Italian high school. Thanks to the support
granted by the European Commission, each partner has the chance to send 2
participants as recipients of a professional training, at a very low price. The social commitment of the partnership is at the
bulk of the project. This aspect is specially underlined by the involvement of Fazenda
de Esperança, hosting organization of the next camp in Brazil. This latter
sustains the rehab and education of former alcohol and drug addicted through
their involvement in the agricultural life, particularly in the coffee
plantation management, having so the possibility of starting a new life. The
rehabilitation at Fazenda de Esperança is very simple and evolves around three
main pillars: community life, spirituality and work. The model, proved to be
very successful and currently there are 75 Fazenda around the world, 55 of them
in Brazil. These farms are also committed in producing and promoting quality
products and coffee culture. The Fazenda de Esperança young people, by taking
part to this camp, will improve their coffee knowledge and will learn about the
